Come on in, family. A lot of you have asked me about the Daniel Fast and how to eat more plants without getting overwhelmed. So let’s lay it out plain and simple: what to eat, what to skip, and easy meals to get you started.
One quick but important note first. This page used to be about HSV and HPV. If that’s what brought you here, please read the section near the end called “Questions About HSV or HPV?” Those are questions for your healthcare provider, and I want you to get the right care.
What Is the Daniel Fast?
The Daniel Fast is a partial fast inspired by the Book of Daniel in the Bible. People who follow it eat mostly fruits, vegetables, whole grains, beans and lentils, nuts, and seeds. They usually avoid processed foods, added sugar, and animal products for a set time, often for prayer and reflection.
It’s a faith practice for many people. For others, it’s just a simple way to eat more plants for a while. Either way, it’s not a one-size-fits-all plan. Listen to your body and talk to your provider before making big changes, especially if you’re pregnant, nursing, have diabetes, or take medicine.
Foods to Enjoy
Fruits: Fresh, frozen, or dried with no added sugar. Apples, bananas, berries, oranges, mangoes, pears, grapes.
Vegetables: Fresh, frozen, or canned with no additives. Leafy greens, broccoli, carrots, peppers, sweet potatoes, onions, tomatoes, squash, cabbage.
Whole grains: Brown rice, quinoa, oats, barley, whole-wheat pasta.
Beans and lentils: Black beans, pinto beans, chickpeas, kidney beans, lentils, split peas.
Nuts and seeds: Almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, chia seeds, flaxseeds.
Healthy fats: Olive oil, avocado.
Drinks: Water, unsweetened herbal teas, and 100% juice watered down.
Flavor: Garlic, onion, herbs, spices, lemon, lime, low-sodium tamari or soy sauce.
Foods to Skip During the Fast
- Processed foods with artificial additives or preservatives
- Added sugar and sweeteners
- Animal products, like meat, dairy, and eggs (in the traditional version)
- Deep-fried foods
Some people choose a modified version that includes a little fish or poultry. That’s a personal choice. Do what’s right for your body and your faith walk, and ask your provider if you’re unsure.
Easy Meal Ideas
It ain’t rocket science, family. Here are simple meals you can make this week.
Breakfast
- Green smoothie: Unsweetened almond milk, a handful of spinach, a banana, and a tablespoon of chia seeds. Blend and go.
- Oatmeal bowl: Cook oats in water or plant milk. Top with fresh berries and a sprinkle of walnuts. (Skip the honey if you’re following the traditional fast. Add it back after.)
Lunch
- Rainbow salad: Mixed greens, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, avocado, and chickpeas. Dress with olive oil and fresh lemon juice.
- Veggie wrap: A whole-grain wrap with hummus, roasted vegetables, and arugula. Add a piece of fruit on the side.
Dinner
- Quinoa stir-fry: Sauté bell peppers, broccoli, carrots, and snap peas. Add cooked quinoa and season with low-sodium tamari and fresh ginger.
- Lentil soup: Simmer lentils with carrots, celery, and onion in vegetable broth. Season with cumin, turmeric, and a pinch of sea salt.
- Rice bowls: For more ideas, see our Daniel’s Fast Rice Bowls recipe post.
Snacks
- An apple with a handful of almonds
- Carrot and cucumber sticks with hummus
- A small handful of trail mix (unsweetened dried fruit, nuts, seeds)
A Simple Shopping List
Have your pen and paper out, family. Here’s a starter list:
- Spinach or mixed greens
- Bananas, apples, berries (frozen is fine)
- Carrots, celery, onion, garlic, bell peppers, broccoli
- Sweet potatoes
- Canned beans (low sodium) and dry lentils
- Brown rice, quinoa, oats
- Almonds or walnuts, chia seeds
- Olive oil, lemons
- Hummus
- Unsweetened almond or oat milk
- Your favorite caffeine-free herbal tea
Tips to Make It Easier
- Start small. You don’t have to switch everything overnight. Try one plant-based day a week, then build.
- Cook once, eat twice. Make a big pot of soup or beans and use it for two or three meals.
- Read labels. Look for added sugar and long ingredient lists.
- Drink your water. Plant-heavy eating means more fiber. Water helps your body handle it.
- Season boldly. Garlic, onion, cumin, ginger, and lemon make plants taste amazing.
- Plan your protein. Beans, lentils, nuts, seeds, quinoa, and tofu all bring protein.
- Rest and pray. For many people, the fast is about spirit as much as food.
Little nugget: If beans give you a little gas at first, start with smaller portions and rinse canned beans well. Your body gets used to more fiber over time.
A Daniel Fast–Friendly Tea
Unsweetened herbal tea fits right in. Here’s a cup built the Base, Support, and Flavor way:
- Base: Rooibos or chamomile (caffeine-free)
- Support: Nettle leaf or rose hips
- Flavor: Lemon peel, fresh ginger, or Ceylon cinnamon
- Heat 8 to 10 oz of water.
- Add 1 to 2 teaspoons of herbs.
- Steep 5 to 10 minutes, then strain.
- Enjoy hot or iced, no sugar needed.
Questions About HSV or HPV?
If you came here looking for information about herpes (HSV) or human papillomavirus (HPV), here’s my honest word: please see a healthcare provider. A food plan is not a substitute for medical care.
According to the CDC, herpes is common, many people have no symptoms, and a provider can test you and talk with you about medicines that help manage outbreaks and lower the chance of passing it to a partner. If you’re pregnant, tell your provider if you’ve ever had herpes or symptoms of it.
For HPV, your provider can talk with you about screening and your options.
A few more important points:
- Be open and honest with your provider about past test results and your history. It helps them give you the right care.
- Keep taking anything your provider prescribes. Don’t stop or change it because of something you read online.
- Talk with your partner, and ask your provider how to lower risk.
Eating more plants, sleeping well, moving your body, and managing stress are good habits for everyone. They go alongside your provider’s care, not in place of it.
